Scindapsus

Scindapsus pictusFamily Araceae

Also known as Satin pothos, silver pothos

A trailing plant with thick, soft, heart-shaped leaves splashed with silver. It grows slower than pothos and stays compact and elegant.

Varieties we grow

Exotica
Large, thick leaves with broad silver patches; semi-trailing and also climbs.
Silver Philo
Dark green leaves sprinkled with glittery silver spots; trailing and very adaptable.
Sterling Silver
Leaves almost entirely covered in a silver sheen; semi-trailing and compact.

Light

It does best in medium to bright indirect light, near a window but out of direct sun, which scorches the silver markings. It tolerates a dimmer corner, but there it grows even slower and puts out smaller leaves.

Watering

Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry and let it drain well. When it's thirsty the leaves curl slightly inward, then open back up after watering. It would rather stay a little dry than soggy, because its roots rot easily.

Soil and pot

Use an airy mix, such as all-purpose potting soil with perlite or coir, in a pot with drainage holes that isn't much bigger than the roots. It looks great trailing from a shelf or basket, and it can also climb a pole, where its leaves grow larger.

Humidity and temperature

It is comfortable between 65 and 86 °F (18–30 °C) with medium to high humidity; the warmer it is, the more it grows. Below 55 °F (13 °C) it stalls and struggles. Keep it out of the air conditioner's draft, which dries the leaf edges.

In the Dominican Republic

It loves the local heat and humidity, but not the strong sun. On a porch or terrace keep it in full shade and out of direct rain, because soil that stays soaked for days rots the roots. If you run the air conditioning all day, group it with other plants so it doesn't lack humidity.
